Payments ReportIndia payment statistics from RBI and NPCI

Methodology

How RBI and NPCI payment statistics are compiled, merged and shown on this site.

Methodology

All figures are taken from official publications of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), including its subsidiary NPCI Bharat BillPay. Nothing is estimated, modelled or taken from news reports or third-party aggregators.

Units

Transaction counts are shown in billions (bn), millions (mn) or as plain numbers. Values are in rupees: crore (1 crore = 10 million) and lakh crore (1 lakh crore = 1 trillion). Average ticket size is value divided by count.

Which source a number comes from

Where two official releases cover the same series, the operator's own figure is used first (NPCI for UPI, IMPS, AePS, FASTag; RBI Payment System Indicators for NEFT, RTGS, cards and wallets), and the other is used as a cross-check. Months before a release began are filled from the RBI bank-wise files, which run back to 2008 for NEFT and RTGS and 2011 for cards and ATMs. The source of every point is recorded in the downloads.

Revisions

RBI and NPCI revise recent months. Each refresh re-reads the latest releases and replaces revised figures. A month is shown as the latest only once it has ended; NPCI's month-to-date numbers appear on the daily chart.

Banks

Sources spell bank names many ways and rename banks over time. Each bank has one record with every spelling seen; banks that merged keep their own history, with a link to the bank they joined.

Gaps

  • NPCI's app, bank, merchant-category and state tables are published from January 2022 (state and district tables from mid-2025).
  • RBI's October 2012 bank-wise ATM release carries the April 2012 sheet again, so October 2012 has no bank-wise card figures.
  • No official monthly series exists for UPI international payments, Credit Line on UPI or RuPay credit cards on UPI, or for FASTag by toll plaza.
